Potato Moong Dal
Delicious and nutritious Dal!

I like this dal so much as it is tasty and also for the reason that it goes well with parathas, hot rice, and rotis. A simple and a tasty dish.

Potato Moong Dal


Moong dal – 1 cup (Beginners, you may refer “How to buy, store and cook moong dal?” as a quick reference)
Potatoes – 2 to 3 nos.
Chopped tomatoes – 2 to 3 nos.
Green chillies – 4 to 5 nos.
Grated ginger – Half inch piece
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Coriander leaves – Few sprigs
Salt – as desired

To Season

Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds (seeragam) – 1 teaspoon
Coriander seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Oil/ghee – 1/2 tablespoon

Note. The ingredients shown will vary with the original quantity.


1. Cook moong dal using 4 cups of water until mushy.

Potato Moong Dal2. Boil potatoes until soft and cut them into pieces.

Potato Moong Dal3. In a pan, heat oil/ghee. Add mustard seeds and wait till it pops out. Now, add cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and turmeric powder.

Potato Moong Dal4. Add tomatoes, green chillies, ginger and fry until the raw smell goes off. Add curry leaves and coriander leaves. Fry well till oil separates.

5. Add salt, boiled potatoes, and moong dal. Cook for 5-7 minutes. If you find the dal to be very thick, add 1/2 to 1 cup of water.

Now, Potato Moong Dal is ready!!!

Serve: Chappathi, Poori, and Rice.
